The
journey to Hana is not found at the end of the road
but along the way. Here you'll discover that the
best kept secrets are found and experienced while
traveling on the road to Hana. So pay close attention
to the sights listed here or better yet, print this
page to be sure not to miss all the most breathtaking
views near every Mile Marker.
The first thing to
remember is to set your Mile Markers correctly.
Go thru the town of Paia & Haiku on Hana Highway,
also known as Hwy 36. As Highway 36 turn into Highway
360, reset your speedometer's mile marker to zero.
Keep in mind that Hwy 36 ends with Mile Marker 16
and the mile marker signs will start all over again
with Mile Marker 0 just before a white bridge. You'll
see a fruit stand on the right, and this is Mile
Marker 2 where Twin Falls is closeby. You may stop
at Twin Falls but being that it's so close to the
town, you can always return to Twin Falls at any
time. It is important
to get on the road to Hana to allow plenty of time
for sight-seeing along the way. The most notable
stops are the following Mile Markers. Enjoy the
drive, be safe and see you in Hana!

Marker 42. The National Park charges $10 for parking.

One of the activities
to do in Hana is hiking. If you love to hike,
a good trail is the Pipiwai
Trail which takes about 2-5 hours
worth of seeing the Makahiku Falls, the Infinity
Pool and the Waimoku Falls. The trail starts near
the Ohe'o bridge by the highway on Mile Marker
42. The Infinity Pool is located
at the top of the 200 feet waterfall. |
|
|
At the end of
the Pipiwai Trail is the 400 feet Waimoku
Falls. A good hiking/guide book is
"Maui Revealed," by Andrew Doughty &
Harriett Friedman, which goes into details on
trails and directions to the best hiking spots,
not just in Hana but all around Maui. This book
is available at Kahului Costco or at Borders on
Dairy Road.
Another activity to do besides hiking is horseback
riding at the Ohe'o
Stable, for a fascinating experience and trail
guide to the Pipiwai area and the nearby small
villages of Kipahulu and Kaupo. |
|
|
Charles
Lindbergh's Grave
This beautifully
decorated grave designed by Charles Lindbergh
himself is located one mile past the Ohe'o Gulch
at the Palapala Ho'omanau Church in Kipahulu.

| |
| This concludes
the journey to Southest Maui, now you have to
find your way home -- either going back the same
way you came (the easiest way and does not break
your car rental agreement) or experience the road
less traveled by going all the way around, the
choice is entirely yours. Remember that highway
31 turns into the paved Highway 37. It takes about
an three to four hours to go all the way around -- taking
you to Tedeshi Winery at the Ulapalakua vineyard to Kula highlands on
Kula Hwy and returning back to Hana Hwy as Kula
Hwy turns into Haleakala Highway. |
